The Noise of Letea, Matthias Leupold, Documentary 29 min RO, Subtitles: EN, DE
»The Noise of Letea« traces the sounds of the small place in the romanian North Dobrudscha located in the Donau Delta. Haunted by the henchman of the russian Tsar for religious reasons, a ukrainian minority was searching for shelter more than 300 years ago. Their descendants speak a specificly cultivated Russian until today which is not spoken elsewhere in the world. Children doesn’t have compulsory education, there is no police or a mayoral, people horse-ride to pubs, horses run free and the cattle returns to their farms itself.
The sound directs: a donkey yells, the wind whistles; the hinge plunges in the river, rural work, traditional chants, the chuffs of a self-built vehicles.
Ten of 2000 inhabitants are employed, the others are self-supporters.
A place on the edge of Europe. A place forgotten by Europe.
»The Noise of Letea« spürt den Geräuschen nach, die aus den einzelnen Gehöften des kleinen Ortes in der rumänische Norddobrudscha im Donaudelta entspringen. Vor mehr als 300 Jahren suchte eine ukrainische Minderheit aus religiösen Gründen Schutz vor den Schergen des russischen Zaren. Bis heute sprechen deren Nachkommen ein sonst nirgendwo mehr gepflegtes altes Russisch. Die Kinder haben keine Schulpflicht, es gibt keine Polizei oder einen Bürgermeister, man reitet zur Bar, Pferde leben frei und das Vieh kehrt abends allein nach Hause in die Bauernhöfe zurück.
Der Sound führt Regie: ein Esel schreit, das Pfeifen des Windes; das Eintauchen einer Angel in den Fluss; ländliche Arbeit, traditionelle Gesänge; das Tuckern der selbst zusammengeschweißten Fahrzeuge…
Von den 2000 Einwohnern gehen gerade einmal 10 einer Arbeit in einer Anstellung nach, alle anderen sind Selbstversorger.
Ein Ort, am Rande Europas und zugleich von Europa vergessen.
Director Biography
Matthias Leupold, was born in East Berlin in 1959. Since the 1980s he has been creating a parallel world through his staged photography. Scenes from this world have been exhibited in over 50 exhibitions in Europe, Asia and the USA, and are published in several books, as well as archived in international collections. Leupold is a professor of Photography at an art and design university in Berlin.
His documentary LIGHTER THAN ORANGE – The Legacy of Dioxin in Vietnam (2015, 72 min) was selected from several festivals in Europe, USA and Asia and awarded with GRAND PRIZE Documentary Feature Award of Socially Relevant Film Festival New York and Best Feature Documentary Los Angeles CineFest. Director Statement
The film THE NOISE OF LETEA poses the question of the lost paradise incidentally. I grew up in a small settlement along the Spree on the outskirts of Eastern Berlin. After the war, small dwellings had been built there for bombed-out Berlins.
When a Romanian student guided me through distributaries oft he Danube during a workshop in 2012, I was reminded of this light-hearted time of my childhood and began to trace the noises in the village of Letea. Every farm appeared to sound different to me. I started taking video and sound recordings. Two years later I returned to this enchanted place with a dedicated film crew to make this movie. The attention lay on the noises and therefor the movie is an invitation to listen to the sound of Letea.
Im Film THE NOISE OF LETEA wird die Frage nach dem verlorenen Paradies ganz nebenbei gestellt. Ich wuchs in einer kleinen Siedlung an der Spree am Rande Ostberlins auf, in welcher nach dem Krieg auf kleinen Grundstücken Behelfsbehausungen für ausgebombte Berliner errichtet worden waren.
Als ich 2012 von einem rumänischen Studenten während eines Workshops über kleine Nebenarme der Donau nach Letea geführt wurde, erinnerte ich mich an diese unbeschwerte Zeit meiner Kindheit und begann, den Geräuschen in diesem Dorf nachzuspüren. Es schien mir, als würde jeder Hof anders klingen. Ich begann die ersten Filmstücke und Töne aufzunehmen. Zwei Jahre später kehrte ich mit einer engagierten Filmcrew an diesen verwunschenen Ort zurück, um diesen stillen Film zu drehen. Ein filmisches Experiment, das der Frage nachgeht, ob der Ton einen ganzen Film tragen kann.
